When you live in College Station, the tall trees and verdant hillsides aren’t the only beautiful views you see. At night, the stars can be mesmerizing. It’s not surprising, then, that stargazing is a favorite Brazos Valley activity. A few tips can help you pinpoint the best areas to enjoy the experience.
Go to a star party
The Texas A&M Astronomy Group and the Mitchell Institute host star parties on campus at Simpson Drill Field Review Stand and outside of Sbisa Dining Hall. “Portable telescopes are placed on campus providing the opportunity for students and area residents to observe the wonders and enchantment of the night sky,” they said. “Through our computerized telescopes, star gazers can view the stunning detail of our Moon and its craters, view Jupiter and its moons, and gaze upon distant nebulae and distant galaxies.”

Join the Brazos Valley Astronomy Club
This club is comprised of amateur astronomers who “are interested in sky watching, imaging, and sharing our craft and love of astronomy with each other and the public at large.” They hold regular meetings as well as star parties and special events focused on stargazing.
Take an astronomy class
If you’re lucky enough to attend an astronomy class on campus, you’ll get to experience the Texas A&M Observatory that’s been ranked third-best in the nation by CollegeRank.net.
Go to Lake Bryan
People who live in College Station love Lake Bryan for so many reasons, and gazing at the stars at night is one of them. While you won’t get the same view as with a telescope and you’ll have to wait for activity at the Lakeside Icehouse to die down, you may eventually be rewarded with a sky full of twinkly stars on a clear night.
Drive out to OSR
For a really dark sky, head north, up 47 to 21 and then to the state highway OSR sign. The remote location provides a beautiful view of the starry sky. You can also get a daily report of Planets Visible in the Night Sky in the area before you go here.
Many of this masterplanned community’s residents have come from Houston and other big cities, drawn in by the wide open space, peaceful surroundings, and the beautiful sky. When you live here, sometimes the best view of the stars is found right in your backyard.
